Keychron V10 First Impressions

While I got this keyboard a month ago, I really haven't had much time to use it yet, so that is why this is still a "first impressions" review.

1- Packaging:
Keyboards came halfway well packaged, the small sides of the boxes were not covered in bubble wrap, which could have caused issued to the hardware. My guess is that there was some sort of size limit, be it in the bubble wrap or by the delivery company.
Strangely, in one of the keyboards the cardboard box was worn out and broken on the top long side, not due to handling, I presume, as no signs of such thing on the wrap nor the outer plastic. Maybe due to storage handling before packaging? Keychron should take better care of products before sending them, if this was the case.

Once the box is open, everything was fine. The protective foam could be a bit harder to reduce risks, but overall is fine.
Just a simple first steps card provided, though I presume people who get this kind of keyboards don't need it because they know what they are doing, and what they want to do.

2- Build Quality & looks:
The keyboard seems well built. Lays flat on the table and feels solid. Lays flat on the table is worth noticing because I've owned keyboards on the same price range that shake on the corners because they don't lay flat, because the keyboard has some bending on the case.
It's a bit big for my liking. I think Keychron could arrange the extra keys closer for the keyboard to take less space on the desktop, though this is a matter of taste.

The volume rocker, though not needed, it's usable. I don't use nor mac nor windows and the volume function is recognized, so it's fine there. To make it better, I would make it as tall as the rest of the keycaps so it wouldn't come up more than the rest of the keys. then again, this is also a matter of personal taste.

Colored keycaps look nice, the combination black-grey-red make it look good, and the keycaps' shape reminds me of the old mechanical keyboards from the late 80's early 90's. Overall a modern-classy look.

The keyboards came with the mac keys on, and with the windows replacement keys for users who don't use mac to change them. Targeting mac audience? Neutral keys anytime soon? For those who don't use mac nor windows, like me.

Also the keyboard provides a mechanical switch on one side by the usb connector to change it's setup from man to windows and viceversa. Really? I don't think that is needed at all in this kind of keyboards.

3- Layout:
The layout is different from what is usually seen in the normal world of keyboards. Split zones for left and right hand make it more ergonomical than regular keyboards so wrist won't suffer as much. The angle at which both sides are rotated seems nice for my arm-wrist, though your mileage may vary. Keychron stopped the slanted keys at some point in order for the keys that are pressed with the pinky finger don't go way too far so user would need to lift the hand to reach them. Nice touch here.

There is a duplication of letter B, so this letter can be typed with left or right hand. I don't find this useful at all, but here is where QMK might come handy.

I would make the Alt, AltGr and Fn keycaps bigger, at least 1.25u, maybe 1.5u. They feel small by the dual spacebars. Then again, matter of personal taste. This leads to the size of other keys, i.e. 'caps lock' and 'left shift', I would make them same size as TAB which would allow the Mx column to lay closer to the rest of the keys. Again, matter of taste.

Key switches are the Keychron Pro Red which are silent and don't make much noise. Well, switches are also a matter of taste. Nonetheless, these feel quite nice, very easy to type without the need to really make any effort with the fingers.

4- Software:
This is where I haven't have time yet to test. I order this keyboard because of the layout and the QMK firmware, in order to be able to set the keyboard the way I want, with the layers I want and with the key arrangement I want. I understand that most buyers would think the same way when they opt for this keyboard, thus no reason to have a hardware switch to change from mac to windows.

I yet have to read the user manual and go to QMK firmware website to program the keyboard. I'll have to review this part once I had completed that task.

5- Conclusion:
'Good with issues'
Good first impression with this keyboard regarding build quality and layout, though a bit big for a 75% keyboard. Layout is well thought of, for people used to a traditional keyboard. If you are seeking alternative layouts, better find another keyboard. A minor issue with the packaging could make the feeling better the packager had payed more attention, if related to pre sending; or better packaging if related to packaging; or better handling by the shipment company. The shipment fee is a bit on the high side depending on where you live, so beware before you buy.

An Epic Core Inside
The Keyboard

A powerful ultra-low-power ARM architecture MCU equipped with 128K Flash will provide more flexibility for developers. The polling rate is 1000 Hz out of the box, which makes latency non-existent for the competitive game.

OSA Profile Double-Shot PBT Keycaps

These double-shot PBT keycaps have a similar height to the OEM profile and has an SA-like shape. We named it the OSA (OEM spherical angled) keycap. The PBT keycaps will provide excellent oil resistance, enhance the type feel, and prevent the legends from fading out.
